While the passage of the Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act now requires cloud providers to comply with court orders for data, uncertainty will likely continue to loom for businesses who find themselves in conflict between U.S. legal demands and foreign legal requirements, TechRepublic reports. Geoffrey Sant, a partner at Dorsey & Whitney, said, "Unfortunately, this ruling means that businesses continue to face uncertainty about how to deal with situations where U.S. litigations require them to do things that would be illegal in foreign countries." Sant expects more conflicts will arise, particularly as the European Union implements the General Data Protection Regulation, and said additional guidance would be necessary.
