DIY Health tech revolution

Where Google failed, new start ups may succeed in bringing new health technology solutions to US healthcare. The result may be lower costs, more choice and greater prevention – or not.

What is changing?

DIY (Do It Yourself) tech based prevention is emerging. Google Health – a system designed to help consumers analyse their health data is due to close at the end of 2011. New alternatives rely on wearable monitors which capture data and provide answers – often via smartphones. Some are one application – monitoring sleep, ovulation, mood; others integrate numerous body indicators, including pictures of food you eat, to provide all round diet and health advice to reduce obesity.
