Crisis as catalyst?

The earthquake and tsunami which hit Japan in March 2011physically changed the face of the north east of the country for ever. Could the aftermath also hasten wider economic, social and political changes?

What is changing?
In the immediate aftermath of the disaster the central government and increasingly the nuclear power companies and regulators have been looking increasingly ineffective, with stress tests and decisions being changed and revoked. Calls for an end to nuclear power followed by decisions to try to get the power plants up and running as soon as possible.

Hurricane warning - eye of the storm passing!

The contagion of new economic problems is spreading again. The U.S. is threatened by a debt downgrade, Italy is now being questioned as to its ability to service its debt, Portugal, Spain and Ireland continue to look vulnerable with most pundits expecting Greece to default. Gold is at record highs as investors run for cover.

But most importantly,according to our contributors, it is growth that is faltering again and it was this that triggered the last recession. This is the fifth month in succession that growth has fallen in our analysis since its high in February.

When will Stock Markets sit up and take notice? We see some adjusting going on in the markets but perhaps September, after the holidays, will once again be the key month to watch for a major disruption as it was at the beginning of the recession that started all this.

Most of our clients have moved from monitoring the situation to taking urgent action to avoid the worst of a potential double dip recession. Have you?
